Many people like wireless Internet because of the convenience it offers them. They don’t have to stay tethered to their desk or other area, and they can go just about anywhere in the house or yard. All they need is a wireless router, a laptop computer, and a decent signal. They can also go to public places that offer wireless internet and use it that way, if they don’t have it at home or they just want to get out for a while. Unfortunately, too many people aren’t careful enough when they set up a wireless network, and that could put them at risk.
If your wireless Internet isn’t security-enabled and you don’t have a good, strong password that you’re using on it, it’s possible for other people to use your network. That can really slow down the connection that you have to the Internet, which can get annoying. It’s also possible for hackers to see what you’re doing online, too, and that’s a lot more dangerous than a slow connection. The good news is that you can avoid all of that by simply making sure you password protect your wireless network. Use something that’s not easy to guess – a combination of letters and numbers works the best – so people can’t easily break in.
Be careful about what you transmit, even if you have a password. If you’re using an older style of protection it can be easier to get into than if you’re using something that’s the newest technology. If you’re unsure, have your Internet company or another trusted professional come out and set up your wireless connection, so you don’t have to worry about what you’re doing online and whether it’s visible to other people who get within your connection’s radius. That peace of mind can be very comforting.
